Vélizy-Villacoublay's famous aviators / Jules Vedrines
Vedrines was born on December 29, 1881 in Saint-Denis. As a mechanic, he rubbed shoulders with Blériot, Latham, Farman and Santos-Dumont, in particular at the Reims air show on August 22, 1909. He became a pilot on December 7, 1910. During his first sortie, he won the first Paris-Pau race on April 22, 1911, followed on May 21, 1911 by the rerun of the Paris-Madrid race - which he was the only pilot to finish. On July 18, 1911 he took part in the 4th European circuit, finishing 4th, then the Anjou circuit with Garios and Brindejonc des Moulinais.
In 1911 he set a new speed record of 167.800kph. He won the Gordon Bennett Cup
in 1912. He subsequently joined Morane, where he completed a series of high speed circuits.
In 1913, he performed the exploit of landing on the roof of the Galeries Lafayette.
In 1915 at Villacoublay, Rolland Garros and Jules Vedrines perfected a mechanism enabling shots to be fired through the propeller, on a Maurane Saulnier.
During the 1914-1918 war, Vedrines distinguished himself by completing what have become known as his "Special missions" with his famous plane "La Vache". He was killed in 1919 in an accident at Saint-Rambert-D'Albon.
